Want to Master a New Subject? Try This Effective Learning Checklist

    6/8/2021

    Hello!

    Welcome to this Tuesday's 2 x 2 Newsletter.

Every week, I share insights from my exploration into the science and art of learning.

My aim is to offer you valuable ideas and tools that you can start using today to learn faster and better.

This week, I created an effective learning checklist that you can use to organize your learning sessions. I know that I will be referring to it for guidance and structure as I begin tackling new learning projects.

2 Quotes on Success and Learning:

    • “Learning means connecting neurons in your brain. To make learning deep and lasting, you have to make those connections strong.” - Barbara Oakley & Olav Schewe: Learn Like a Pro

    • “The common denominator of success – the secret of success of every individual who has ever been successful – lies in the fact that he or she formed the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do.” - Albert E. N. Gray: The Common Denominator of Success

    2 Thoughts From Me:

    • Lots of things are necessary—but not sufficient—for learning. Sleep, attention, a distraction-free environment, uninterrupted blocks of time, and the right study materials are foundational. Remove any one of these pillars, and the structure that you are building becomes unstable.

    • Learning takes time, and is an exercise in patience. When it comes to building new knowledge and skills, whoever has the most patience wins.

Here is my summary of Barbara Oakley's latest book: Learn Like a Pro. I highly recommend the book as an accessible, no-nonsense guide to science-based learning.

    Until next week,

    Matthew Outerbridge
